About Darryl Loy

Independent School Leader, Author, Speaker and Coach

I began my education career journey in the fall of 2003 at an independent school in Fort Worth, Texas following an established and successful career in corporate finance and accounting.  In short, I am an accountant turned IT guy turned well seasoned and passionate educational leader and thinker.  If that piques your interest, please read on.

Over the last couple decades, I have developed a deeper understanding of the purpose of technology in education and what my colleagues have called a “refreshing perspective” on learning in the modern world.

And now, as an independent school leadership coach, I am dedicated to empowering leaders to reimagine their institution in light of the modern world and to equip and activate the next generation for success.

More About Me.

Clearly, the world around us has seen significant and impactful changes in recent years, especially in the area of technology.  Often however, the world tends to focus on the negative impact technology has had, especially in the lives of young people.  While acknowledging the reality of those negative aspects, I believe positive impacts far outweigh the negative.  I believe it is incumbent upon educational institutions to foster those positive aspects of technology to prepare students for the realities of and success in the modern world.  Dr. Jordan Shapiro, in his book “The New Childhood - Raising Kids to Thrive in a Connected World” suggests that “The purpose of school is to teach kids how to express themselves using the tools that currently shape their world.”  Historically, I too believe that to be true.  For that purpose to remain true, meaningful and relevant integration of technology and devices into curriculum is key to our student’s success.

I also believe the computer’s use in education has historically been mistaken for “just another tool”.  It is a tool but it happens to be the most powerful tool ever made for education.  Other devices are most often viewed as distractions rather than the powerful creative and insightful tools that they are.  Education technology infused curriculum is the foundation on which modern learning could and should be built.  Never in the history of American education has there been such an impetus for a deep, fundamental shift in the way student’s learn.  I want to be responsible for supporting that shift on behalf of the students everywhere!

Here is a bit more on my thinking around the topic of Modern Learning and technology.  I attended a webinar some time ago held by the Association of Technology Leaders in Independent Schools (ATLIS) on innovative learning spaces.  Near the end of the webinar, during a Q&A time with the host, I garnered the interest of the participants and ATLIS Director, Dr. Ashley Cross, with my work in rethinking the technology departments in educational institutions.  You can watch the Q&A section of the webinar where I talk about my work transitioning to the Department of Modern Learning here.

That Q&A discussion led to an interview for a feature article in ATLIS’s publication, Access Points, found here as well as being asked to moderate a panel discussion at the organization’s most recent annual conference.

Additionally, I’d like to share a podcast I was recently on to speak about technology and students.  The podcast is a production of The Hills Church’s Next Gen Ministry team and while the primary audience is the Next Gen parent community, I did discuss a bit about the role of technology in education as well.  Here are links to part 1 and part 2, episodes 75 and 76 of the Next Gen Now podcast.

Other Fun Facts:

Musician

Bass Player

I played saxophone throughout my junior high and high school years.  I picked up the bass guitar in my sophomore year and haven't put it down.  I've played in a variety of bands and on worship teams, travelled the country and even performed overseas in a USO band.

Audio & Video Producer

Podcast producer, independent video production work

Federal Bureau of Investigation

Graduate of FBI Dallas Citizens Academy and Board Member of the FBI Dallas Citizens Academy Alumni Association

Video and audio production interests relate directly to the creative person inside just as music has.  As a musician, I've performed on many recording projects which fueled my interest in the production side of the desk as well.

I was selected to participate in the Dallas CA class of 2018.  This was an incredible and rare opportunity to become part of the FBI family and learn about the FBI from the inside out.  I participated in case reviews and training scenarios and continue to serve on the Board of the CAAA to help the organization continue its role educate the public on who the FBI is and their mission to protect the American people and uphold the Constitution.
